During a meeting with Latvian PM Krisjanis Karins and Portuguese PM Antonio Costa in Meseberg on Wednesday, Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed that she had telephoned President Putin asking him to ‘influence President Lukashenko.’
The Chancellor praised Portugal’s national vaccination rate while criticising the German vaccination willingness. She also expressed great sorrow for the lack of humanitarian handling of the refugee situation on the Polish-Belarusian border.
Tensions between the EU and Belarus have been escalating in recent months, with the EU accusing Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of deliberately sending migrants to the border in response to sanctions imposed by the EU.
Earlier Lukashenko had stated that he would weaken control over migration at the borders with Western countries.
EU ambassadors agreed on Wednesday that Belarus migrant ‘hybrid attack’ is a legal basis for a new round of sanctions for Minsk.

SOT, Angela Merkel, German chancellor (German): “I want to say explicitly Portugal has a fantastic vaccination rate, the population here has been vaccinated to a high degree. 86 percent of the total population and those who can be vaccinated, of course much higher. This also means that the number of cases is lower there - Latvia has just gone through a difficult time in which many people have understood, I believe, that it is better to be vaccinated, that you protect yourself, but also protect the community, and in Germany I have to say that our vaccination rate is not exactly high enough to prevent the virus from spreading quickly.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, German chancellor (German): “You are all following the images that give cause for concern. I spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the phone today and asked him to influence President Lukashenko, because people are being used here. They are, so to speak, victims of a policy that is hostile to human beings and something must be done about this and we will also talk about this. How can we support the countries with the external border of Belarus and what can we do overall to solve this issue in a humane way, which unfortunately is not the case at the moment.”
