Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Armin Laschet delivered a statement in Dusseldorf on Tuesday, following a CDU parliamentary group meeting, to announce North Rhine-Westphalia Transport Minister Hendrik Wust as his pick to succeed him as the premier of NRW and the CDU state chairman.
Laschet is leaving his post in NRW to enter the Bundestag via the state list of his party.
Armin Laschet’s CDU, which was running together with its Bavarian partner, the Christian Social Union, finished second with 24.1 percent of the vote in the German federal election held last month. They lost more than a quarter of support compared to the last election in 2017.
