German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke at the SPD party congress in Berlin on Saturday laying out an optimistic plan for his new governing coalition.

“There is a new beginning. Many have the feeling that now something can happen in this country, with the new government of SPD, Greens and FDP. A government of 3 parties that have made the progress to the goal, something different but still pursued together. And I hope that all want to help, that this new beginning now immediately succeeds, that we create it, that the twenties will be good,” Scholz said.

Scholz continued, “we want one thing to become decisive again in this country. Confidence, a view of the future that is linked to hope. And that can also succeed if we succeed in modernizing now, in industrial economic terms. If we make sure that everyone has the feeling that ‘it’s going well for me’. And if we keep a society together. And in where the respect is valued.”

Olaf Scholz and the newly formed “traffic light coalition” of the German Greens and FDP took reigns of the German government on Wednesday officially ending the 16-year era of Angela Merkel.
