Several prominent members of the German government and Bundestag joined Berlin’s Jewish community in the illumination of the first candle for Hannukah in the German capital on Sunday.
Rabbi Yuheda Teichtal, Actress Idris Berben, Bundestag President Barbel Bas, Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection Christine Lambrecht, and Vice President of Bundestag Claudia Roth were all seen in attendance, where some gave speeches commenting on the holiday and issues facing the Jewish community in Germany.
SOT, Yehuda Teichtal, Berlin Rabbi and President of Chabad Jewish Education Centre: “We want to thank you for being with us here in Germany tonight as we light the first candle, as we say that the past darkness of the times of the Holocaust are forever gone, and that we will light a torch of a future of Jewish life, of positive tolerance in Germany and across Europe.”
SOT, Barbel Bas, President of Bundestag (German): “In our society, anti-Jewish hostility shows itself in frighteningly many forms, from hatred and ignored, in the school yards and *inaudible*, under criticisms of Israeli policies, and like for people who seek someone to blame for all wrong in the world. No form of Anti-semitism can be excused or apologised for.”
SOT, Claudia Roth, Vice President of Bundestag (German): “The message of the wonder of Hanukkah we are capturing here at Brandenburg Gate, here on this historical place 76 years after tragedy of the Shoah is particularly special. That we are celebrating here together and visibly in the heart of Berlin, in our capital. That we can reach out today across the darkest parts of our history, the trust in our democracy, all of this is a great gift. All of this is a large *inaudible* . All of this is the success fo the impossible.
