Germany: Protesters rally outside Leipzig hotel after Jewish guest says he was discriminated against

Protesters staged a rally outside a hotel in Leipzig on Tuesday after a Jewish guest says he was discriminated against by staff during check-in a day earlier.

German-Israeli musician Gil Ofarim, who is Jewish, took to social media to allege a hotel employee had asked him to ‘put away’ his Star of David necklace or be refused check-in on Monday evening. The incident followed a long wait in a queue for Ofarim during which other guests were called forward to the hotel counter ahead of him without explanation.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the venue to express solidarity with Ofarim and protest against anti-Semitism in Germany.

Hotel staff were also seen gathered outside the venue holding a banner featuring Israeli flags and Islamic Star and crescent symbols alongside the name of the hotel - The Westin Leipzig’ - in an apparent show of solidarity.

The hotel is reported as having begun an internal investigation into the incident while the police are also probing events.
