Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky denied reports of Ukrainian shells exploding in the Rostov region while speaking at the Munich Security Conference (MSC) on Saturday.
Commenting on reports of a shell exploding in Russia’s Rostov Region 1 kilometer from the border with Ukraine on Friday, Zelensky said, “this is a direct provocation. This is a pure lie. No one was wounded. This is just cynicism at such a high level that they are blowing up something on their side and shooting. This is not the first time since 2014 that they aim their guns at the territory that they control.”
The president went on to complain about mandatory reforms in times of conflict while encouraging countries to back Ukraine financially. He also demanded a clear timeframe for Ukraine to become a NATO member and joked about Russian cyber attacks, when his translation headset apparently broke, sparking laughter in the audience.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine (Ukrainian): “What the events in the temporarily occupied territories showed yesterday - mortar fire, shelling from our sides, with shells reaching Rostov region of Russia - this is just blunt provocation. These are pure lies. No one was killed or wounded. This is just cynicism at such a high level that they are blowing up something on their side and shooting. This is not the first time since 2014 that they aim their guns at territory that they control.”
SOT, Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine (Ukrainian): “Bring your business in. If you are afraid. Ok - give us cheap financing, grant us financial support. When we are getting money, why are we always getting these conditions? Why do we have to do one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, a dozen reforms? Is there any other country in the world that would have such a strong army at their eastern borders, with all these reforms implemented at the same time? That is not easy.”
SOT, Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine (Ukrainian): Everyone is saying that there is a certain distance between NATO and Ukraine that we need to walk. All we are saying is tell us, how much time it will take to complete this distance measured in years? You see that this is not just measured in hours. You can see in the tragedies it is measured in the human lives of Ukrainians. So tell us, on this distance, is it fair for us to get the guarantees, while we are still walking this path? Some diplomatic guarantees. Isn’t it simply fair? No one is pushing anyone against the wall with the question for us to be there in NATO. That’s not the case. We want it, we do. But until we have the possibility, what we want is security guarantees.”
SOT, Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine (English): “Just a second, I think cyber attack. Can I have another one [headset] for translation? You see, Russia is not here, but they are here.”
