Minister President of Saxony Michael Kretschmer criticised the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party for causing what he described as ‘a lot of damage,’ ahead of a vote on COVID regulations in the state parliament in Dresden on Monday.

During his speech, Kretschmer called the AfD’s position harmful, which he alleged was expressed in its denial of COVID and mobilisation against mask wearing.

Kretschmer went on to denounce as unacceptable the treatment of Saxony Minister of Health Petra Kopping, after protesters had held a torchlight demonstration in front of her private home on Friday evening.

After the speech, President of the Saxon Parliament Matthias Rossler counted the votes of MPs in a subsequent ballot and announced that a regional epidemic emergency situation was declared with 78 votes in favour and 32 votes against.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Michael Kretschmer, Minister President of Saxony (German): “What happened to our colleague Petra Kopping at the end of last week, it is a violation of boundaries, it is an attempt at intimidation that can clearly be described as such, and we must not put up with it. We will not put up with this, Petra Kopping, you have our one hundred percent solidarity, support - we will not let ourselves be treated like this.”

SOT, Michael Kretschmer, Minister President of Saxony (German): “We are meeting here in the Saxon Parliament to identify a particularly traumatic epidemiological situation for our Free State of Saxony. Based on the ideas in the federal government that there should no longer be a pandemic situation of national scope, the states are required to determine such a situation in their respective states - a very adventurous procedure, because a pandemic does not stop at the borders of federal states.”

SOT, Michael Kretschmer, Minister President of Saxony (German): “It is true that there are people who have also taken their opinion, their position from the AfD. And their behaviour to deny Corona, to be against vaccination, to be against testing, to mobilise against masks, has caused a lot of damage.”

SOT, Matthias Rossler, President of Saxon parliament (German): “My dear colleagues, may I announce the result of the nominal vote. There were 78 votes in favour, 32 votes against and nine votes for no participation. The printed matter with the corresponding amendments 7/8285 is thus approved.”
