Chancellor Olaf Scholz called upon Germany to rally in solidarity against the ongoing coronavirus in his inaugural New Year’s Eve address on Friday from Berlin.
“One thing is clear to all of us: the pandemic is not over. Unfortunately. After the past 21 months, we have longed for it so much. The big New Year’s Eve party has to be cancelled again this evening,” Scholz informed the nation.
“In the next few weeks there are clear restrictions, also for private contacts. Because the virus is now even easier to transmit in the new Omicron variant. Please take these restrictions very seriously,” he continued.
The new chancellor discussed the SPD-led government’s ambitious plans for the upcoming years, stating that the ‘20’s would be a ‘decade of new beginnings.’
Scholz concluded his address calling for European solidarity, in particular with the ongoing border tensions between Ukraine and Russia.

“Our goal is a sovereign, strong Europe. A Europe that lives according to its common values of peace, the rule of law and democracy. Transatlantic cooperation is also essential for security in Europe. With a view to Ukraine, we are currently facing new challenges. The inviolability of borders is a valuable asset and not negotiable,” Scholz said.

SOT, Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany (German): “The year 2021 was very challenging for all of us. The corona pandemic with its burdens and profound restrictions is in our bones.”

SOT, Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany (German): “Getting coronavirus under control - that is the one big task in the New Year. The other big task is to lay the foundations for our country to continue to make good progress. The 20’s will be a decade of new beginnings. We have set ourselves ambitious goals for this: Germany should be climate neutral in less than 25 years. To do this, we will advance the biggest restructuring of our economy in more than 100 years.”
