Germany: Seibert says goodbye after 11 years as govt spox with media appeal

The outgoing German government spokesman Steffen Seibert attended what will likely be his last government press conference in Berlin on Monday.

Seibert, Germany’s longest-serving government spokesman, said the weekly press conferences are ‘greatly democratic.’

“I think we all agree that the procedure of the government press conference like the one we have here under the journalists’ directory is the best procedure, especially in view of the freedom of the media,” said Seibert.

The spokesman went on to question why more TV stations, agencies, and ‘big media conglomerates’ do not send journalists to film the tri-weekly meetings, adding, “I think it is important that the media from the capital show up here in the room so that this event doesn’t get sidetracked.”

“We are repeatedly confronted with representatives of international state media or their offshoots, who use a journalistic freedom here that they do not allow at home, that is suppressed there. There are good reasons why such media are also allowed here and why they have the right to ask questions. I support that too. But let’s not forget how they relate to our democracy and what their mission is when they come here,” Seibert continued.

As of 2021, Germany ranks 13 in the World Press Freedom Index.

Seibert has been German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesperson since 2010.
