Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Soder stressed his support for CDU chancellor candidate Armin Laschet and railed against a potential Red-Red-Green goverment coalition at the CSU party conference in Nuremberg on Friday.
Addressing hundreds of party colleagues present, Soder warned urgently against a ‘political landslide’ to the left as Lachet lags behind in the polls.
“Let’s fight, let’s show that we can still do it. Unity with us, unity with Armin Laschet, but also determination. We want to win elections, I’ve already said, I have no desire for opposition,” Soder told the crowd.
“Red-red-green is a spicy stew, but the traffic light, dear friends with the FDP, is still left-wing, even if it is only a diluted left-wing soup, and we don’t want that for our country,” the CSU leader said.
In the most recent polls for the federal election on 26 September, SPD’s Chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz leads ahead of the CDU/CSU Armin Laschet.

SOT, Markus Soder, Bavarian Prime Minister (German): “It is not a simple jubilant party conference as we would like it to be and these are serious times. Serious for the country, coronavirus fatigue, climate stress, Afghanistan shock, all that depresses the mood in the country. But it is also serious for the party. The poll numbers are not good enough and there is indeed the threat of a political landslide. For the first time in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany, a red-red-green government could come to power. I say it is the task of this party congress, we do not want a slide to the left in Germany”

SOT, Markus Soder, Bavarian Prime Minister (German): “We will show the leftists that we have not given up yet dear friends, let’s fight, let’s show that we can still do it. Unity with us, unity with Armin Laschet, but also determination. We want to win elections, I’ve already said, I have no desire for opposition.”

SOT, Markus Soder, Bavarian Prime Minister (German): “A party needs more closeness, closer to the people is only possible when people see each other. The footballers don’t want ghost games, we don’t want a ghost party conference. I’m glad to finally feel more normality again, curtain up!”

SOT, Markus Soder, Bavarian Prime Minister (German): “It is totally bizarre. Although the situation for our country and the people has never been more serious, the election campaign has been less serious than ever. Larifarian discussions about CVs, about laughs or whether someone praises more or less, or more convincingly or less credibly. Let’s stop in Germany, and I say this to the many people listening today, let’s stop philosophising about questions of style, what matters is content. Differences matter. Voting for parties means other concepts. It is an important decision. The right to vote, which so many people in this world are fighting for, is important.”

SOT, Markus Soder, Bavarian Prime Minister (German): “And I tell you, the country has been well protected, especially by Angela Merkel. I would like to take this opportunity to show my respect and thanks to her personally on behalf of the CSU and, if I may, also on behalf of the Bavarians. She has led our country excellently and protected the people well.”

SOT, Markus Soder, Bavarian Prime Minister (German): “And now they are talking about ‘tax increases must not be’. This is a step towards a left government. And please don’t underestimate it for all middle-class voters. Red-red-green is a spicy stew, but the traffic light, dear friends with the FDP, is still left-wing, even if it is only a diluted left-wing soup, and we don’t want that for our country. “
