Politicians and locals took part in the commemorative event in Berlin on Tuesday, marking the anniversary of the November 1938 pogroms against the Jewish population.
German President Frank Walter Steinmeier, Governing Mayor of Berlin Michael Muller and Federal Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht attended the wreath-laying ceremony at the Jewish community centre in Berlin.
Jewish community Chairman of Berlin Gideon Joffe and Holocaust survivor Margot Friedlander were also among the guests..
After the ceremony, an official memorial service was held, at which Mueller and Lambrecht spoke.
“There is no place for hatred and violence, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, racism and sedition. It cannot and must not be that even in 2021 Jews will still be confronted with the prejudice that they do not really belong to Germany. Not only is this falsification of history, it is also completely unacceptable,” said Mueller.
November 9 is a day of historical significance for Germany, marking the anniversary of a number of crucial events in the country’s history. Among the most significant is ‘Kristallnacht,’ or the ‘Night of the Broken Glass,’ the day in 1938 when Nazi Germany began a pogrom against the Jewish population. November 9, 1989 meanwhile is the date when the Berlin Wall was toppled, paving the way for the eventual reunion of Germany’s East and West.

SOT, Michael Muller, Governing Mayor of Berlin (German): “We cannot accept it when hate and violence against Jews and the Israeli state are incited in our city and in our country. Neither the Senate nor the overwhelming majority of Berliners understand this. In our free society, there is no place for hatred and violence, anti-Semitism, islamophobia, racism and sedition. It cannot and must not be that even in 2021 Jews will still be confronted with the prejudice that they do not really belong to Germany. Not only is this falsification of history, it is also completely unacceptable.”

SOT, Michael Muller, Governing Mayor of Berlin (German): “From today’s commemoration of the November Pogroms 1938, the following message is based on the fact that freedom and democracy, tolerance and cosmopolitanism are not a matter of course, and yes, must be maintained over and over again. We are therefore all called upon to resolutely oppose hatred and violence, racism and sedition. Whoever agitates against people of different faith and people who think differently, who attacks religious and cultural institutions, attacks our free society and democracy, you have to point this out again and again. And we can’t accept that. Ladies and gentlemen, in the light of freedom and democracy, we remember the victims of national socialism and the victims of the November Pogroms of 1938 with sadness and shame about what happened.”

SOT, Christine Lambrecht, Federal Justice Minister (German): “Ladies and gentlemen, it was not only the corona pandemic that caused us great worries this year. The anti-Semitic demonstrations on German streets were a low point. And I say it very clearly, these demonstrations were a disgrace for our country. And one thing is clear, for anti-jewish slogans, stones thrown at synagogues and burning Israel flags there is no justification, under any circumstances and for no one. Regardless of whether you were born in Germany or have made your home here. Whoever perpetrates such attacks commits criminal acts, has the right against himself and has this society against him. It is frightening that the hatred of Jews is increasing again and the criminalist statistics testify to this, as is the increasingly louder and more aggressive hatred on the internet. With the corona pandemic, anti-Semitic and racist conspiracy theories have spread once again.”
