A Guatemalan Air Force plane landed in Guatemala City on Sunday carrying the first four coffins with the bodies of Guatemalan migrants who died after a truck overturned in Chiapas last Thursday.
Four coffins were unloaded from the plane via a ramp onto the hearses, which would later transfer them to the families for burial in the municipalities where they were originally from.
“Of these 20 people,” Guatemalan Foreign Minister Eduardo Hernandez stated, “six have already been confirmed, four came today, two are in the process and we are waiting for the rest to come in due course over the next few days”.
Last Thursday, 55 migrants were killed and more than 100 injured when the truck they were travelling in was involved in an accident.
The Chiapas state prosecutor’s office, where the accident took place, has opened an investigation.
SOT, Eduardo Hernandez, Minister of Foreign Affairs (Spanish): “Of these 20 people, six have already been confirmed, four came today, two are in process and we are waiting for the rest to come in due course over the next few days.”
SOT, Eduardo Hernandez, Minister of Foreign Affairs (Spanish): “The difficulties always lie in the coordination with the families, we have been very emphatic that they approach the official sources. Both we and the Foreign Ministry have set up the 1541 number here in Guatemala for free use so that family members who suspect that their loved ones may have been victims of the accident can contact us. This has also been done by CONAMIGUA (National Council of Migrants in Guatemala) precisely to reach out to all the people and let them know that we are supporting them in the process.”
