Thousands of people travelled between Villa Comaltitlan and Escuintla, in the Mexican state of Chiapas, on Thursday, marching towards the north of the country within the migrant caravan.

Upon arrival at Escuintla, the rain prevented them from continuing their journey and they camped in an auditorium to try to protect themselves from the weather.

Migrants left last Saturday from the municipality of Tapachula, and aim to reach Mexico City to protest because of the delay in asylum applications processing.

Among the members of the caravan, mostly from Central American countries and Haiti, there are also children, elderly people, pregnant women, people with disabilities and members of the LGTBQ + community, who have suffered threats in their countries of origin.

“I never imagined walking so much,” said Araceli, a migrant from Guatemala, adding that “my daughter stayed in Guatemala, I fight for her, I know that I am a fighter mother.”

SOT, Araceli Lopez, Migrant from Guatemala (Spanish): “From the moment we left Chiapas I never imagined walking so much, but first of all I asked god for a lot of strength because I know that god is with us. I am here for my little angel who is in heaven, for my daughter who stayed in Guatemala. I fight for them, and I know that I am a fighting mother and that thank god, my parents have taught me that you have to be strong for everything.”

SOT, Maria Granados, Migrant from El Salvador (Spanish): “[I plan to go] to the other side [of the border] if god allows it, because we cannot be in El Salvador, there are too many criminals, and they have already tried to kill my son four times.”
