A heavy police presence was deployed around Paris’ Eiffel Tower, on Sunday, to crack down on France’s ‘Freedom Convoy’ protesters who gathered in the city over the weekend.

Dozens of officers approached cars and protesters outside of the iconic monument, in an effort to move them on.

Thousands of security forces were dispatched around the capital over the weekend to stop the country’s version of the ‘Freedom Convoy’ protests, which were inspired by their Canadian counterpart.

Vehicles from across France drove into central Paris starting on Friday in protest against the government’s measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, despite a stay-away order by the authorities.

France’s version of the Freedom Convoy is also protesting against high fuel prices.

Paris has started relaxing its COVID restrictions, with residents no longer required to wear masks in outdoor or public spaces, in light of the ‘improvement in the health situation,’ according to local authorities.

The incidence rate in France has decreased in the last few days, but the country recorded almost 400,000 new COVID-19 infections at the start of February.
