Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti discussed his striker’s mental condition after his top goalscorer was found guilty of conspiring to blackmail fellow French footballer Mathieu Valbuena with a sex tape on Wednesday.

“We spoke before the game, it’s a story that has already been around for a long time, people are talking about it for a while. The player is completely focused on his game and the team, nothing else. He did really well, I saw that he was very calm before the game and he was very good during the match,” said Ancelotti when questioned about Benzema’s state of mind after their Champions League match against FC Sheriff Tiraspol.

A judge decided to give Benzema a one-year suspended jail term and ordered him to pay a €75,000 ($84,000) fine.

Real Madrid and France striker Karim Benzema was one of five people to be put on trial last month is a case regarding an attempt to extort Valbuena in June 2015, when the two players were together at the French national team training camp.

Benzema allegedly put pressure on Valbuena to pay the blackmailers in possession of a sex tape that featured Valbuena. The judge ruled that Benzema had conspired with the blackmailers and acted as intermediary.

Real Madrid won Wednesday’s match 3-0, with Benzema bagging the third goal. Real have now guaranteed qualification out of the Champions League group stage for the 30th consecutive season, setting up a final group match against Inter Milan to fight for first place.
