Unauthorised rallies have sprung up across Russia once again in support of Alexei Navalny - Vladimir Putin’s harshest critic - who is on hunger strike demanding medical attention.

More 1,500 protesters were arrested across Russia, as authorities made good on their promise to respond to rallies with heavy-handed tactics.

Alexei Navalny was jailed in February on an old embezzlement charge. His health has apparently deteriorated since his incarceration, though prison doctors insist his condition is ‘satisfactory’ and prescribed a course of vitamins.
