Israel: Family of boy who survived cable car disaster in court over return to Italy

The family of six-year-old Eitan Biran were seen arriving for a court hearing in Tel Aviv on Thursday as a legal battle over the custody of the cable car crash survivor continues, after an Italian judge issued an international arrest warrant for the boy’s grandfather Shmulik Peleg.

Eitan was the sole survivor of the cable car disaster in May, where his parents, sibling and grandparents were among the 14 people killed in the accident near Lake Maggiore.

Paternal relatives claim Eitan was flown to Israel by his grandfather, Shmulik Peleg, without their consent. An Israeli court had earlier ordered the return of the boy to his family in Italy, a decision that’s being appealed by Eitan Biran’s family in Israel.

Ronen Dlayahu, Peleg’s lawyer, said that “during the hearing the main matters we brought up were discussed, regarding the centre of the boy’s living, his usual place of living, and other matters I won’t elaborate on. We are waiting for a direction that is expected in the coming days.”

He commented on the arrest warrant saying “we did not receive the arrest warrant and this is not the matter that was discussed now. Currently we are discussing only the civil procedures reading The Hague convention.”

Aya Biran, Eitan’s aunt, arrived at court with her legal team as did his grandmother Esther Peleg.
