The Italian Po River has been experiencing drought rates out of seasonal averages, as drone footage filmed on Friday near Ferrara in the Emilia-Romagna region shows.

The filmed footage reveals large drought-induced sandbanks in an area where hydrometric levels equal to the summer months were recorded.

In 2022, Italy went through one of its least rainy Januarys in several decades, including low snowfall compromising the river flows.

As the river serves as a water supply basin for crops, the low water levels might soon cause problems for agricultural activities and might have a severe impact on the region’s flora and fauna.

Drought is not an unusual phenomenon, but the frequency with which it recurs in recent years is considered out of the normal.
