Italy’s president Sergio Mattarella took part in a swearing-in ceremony in Rome after being re-elected for a second mandate, on Thursday.

Mattarella, who originally ruled out remaining in office, bowed to increasing pressure on the eighth ballot from MPs, Senators and regional representatives.

“My thoughts right now are with Italians of all ages, from all regions, from all social conditions, from all political affiliations, in particular those that are suffering the most, that are waiting from the Republic for the guarantee of rights, reassurance, support and responses to their hardships,” Mattarella told the assembly during his speech, referencing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The ceremony concluded with a visit to the ‘Altare della Patria’ (Altar of the Fatherland) where Mattarella received military homage and paid his respects at the shrine of the unknown Italian soldier.
