Palermo’s Falcone Borsellino international airport opened up a temporary vaccination facility on Thursday, providing a walk-in service for local residents and travellers.

“The airport is a place where many passengers arrive with an expired green pass or because they have taken the last dose in another country, where for example the expiration date is different from the expected one from the Italian regulation, and therefore they arrive here without a Green pass,” commented Renato Costa, Palermo’s COVID Emergency Commissioner.

Costa also noted that some may also decide to take advantage of the facility to get a booster shot.

The facility is providing vaccines free of charge to those over the age of 12, initially for two days only, until Friday 18.

According to the latest data compiled by the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Centre on Thursday, a total of just over 78 percent of the country’s population has been fully vaccinated.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Sara, Traveller (Italian): “Here they have created a vaccination center and therefore gave a possibility to those who live in the surroundings or those who are departing or arriving, to have this vaccination service available free of charge.”

SOT, Linda, Traveller (Italian): “It is a great thing, in fact I came immediately as soon as I read on the internet that there was this possibility. I had planned to get the vaccine but with this excuse I took advantage of it by anticipating it.”

SOT. Renato Costa, Palermo COVID Emergency Commissioner (Italian): “The airport is a place where many passengers arrive with an expired green pass or because they have taken the last dose in another country, where for example the expiration date is different from the expected one from the Italian regulation, and therefore they arrive here without a Green pass. Or people who need to do the booster dose. Same thing can happen at the start, for this reason we have imagined making a garrison at the service of these people.”
