Mount Etna erupted while covered in snow, spewing lava, ashes and smoke into the winter sky near Catania in Sicily, on Monday.
The volcanic smoke reached a height of 12 km (7.6 miles), causing the authorities to issue a flight warning and temporary close the Catania Vincenzo Bellini International Airport.
Mount Etna is Italy’s tallest active volcano, with eruptions happening multiple times a year.
