Japan: Cicadas make themselves heard as Olympics go on without fans in Tokyo

The sound of cicadas could be heard all around Tokyo’s Budokan Judo Arena on Saturday, as the Olympic Games continued in the Japanese capital.

With no fans allowed inside the Olympic venues the buzz of the insects has reportedly become one of the hallmarks of the Games.

“It is quite normal for cicadas to sing in summer in Japan, and when there are noisy cicadas like this, I feel that summer is here,” said local resident Kazuya Osawa. Families, especially those with young children, gather around trees and catch the cicadas with butterfly nets.

Whenever the sound fades away, “I think that summer is almost over,” said another local.

The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo are set to continue until August 8.

SOT, Abe Ami, Resident (Japanese): “I was really surprised when I heard that it is kind of rare comment (from international athletes) because cicada’s sound is already common in Japan during summer. When I hear the sound of them, I know that summer has arrived.”

SOT, Abe Ami, Resident (Japanese): “The Olympics have already started, so it can’t be helped. But it’s not like there’s a lot of people coming (to Tokyo), and it’s noisy or anything like that because everyone is really quiet.”

SOT, Kazuya Osawa, Resident (Japanese): “It is quite normal for cicadas to sing in summer in Japan, and when there are noisy cicadas like this, I feel that summer is here.”

SOT, Fumi Osawa. Resident (Japanese): “In Japan, it’s a noisy summer. The cicadas are singing all the time. Even in my apartment building, there are always cicadas living in the doorway, twisting and turning, and it’s always so obvious. So when the cicadas change their sound, I think that summer is almost over, or something like that. Cicadas are a summer tradition.”
