Japan: COVID-19 a 'priority challenge' says newly sworn-in PM Kishida amid snap election call

Japan’s newly sworn-in Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called out COVID-19 as a key challenge for his cabinet during a press conference held in Tokyo on Monday.
As part of his first day in office, Kishida also called for an election to be held on October 31.
“Under my cabinet, first of all, the immediate and priority challenge is the counter measures against the COVID-19 and we are going to do our utmost to fight against it so that people can understand what we intend to do,” explained Kishida.
“Many people are suffering from the huge impact (of COVID-19), in order to support those people we will quickly put together an economic package,” noted Kishida.
Kishida, a member of the Liberal Democratic Party, became Japan’s 100th Prime Minister on Monday, replacing Yoshihide Suga.
Suga resigned from his role as prime minister in early September following plummeting support over his government’s handling of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
