Japan: PM Kishida vows to strengthen military in response to actions by China, North Korea

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said he would strengthen the country’s military, citing concerns over North Korean ballistic missile tests and China developing its military, in a speech as he reviewed Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) at Camp Asaka, north of Tokyo, on Saturday.

“North Korea continues to launch ballistic missiles, a violation of Security Council resolutions,” Kishida told troops gathered at the base. “China continues to strengthen its military and attempt to change the status quo unilaterally, without sufficient transparency.”

He added, “I have directed the revision of the National Security Strategy, the National Defense Program Outline, and the Medium-term Defense Force Improvement Plan. We will consider all options, including the possession of the so-called enemy base attack capability, and strengthen our defense capability as necessary.”
