Japanese journalists said they were shocked by four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka’s sensational loss in the third round of the Olympic tournament as they followed the race at the Olympic media centre on Tuesday.

Reporter Milo Jojima said that many Japanese fans were ‘shocked’ by the news, however, she stressed that the nation’s superstar went through a depression and nevertheless lit the fire at the opening ceremony. “I think she was under such pressure,” Jojima added.

Naomi Osaka was ousted with a shock straight-sets loss to Marketa Vondrousova from the Czech Republic in the third round of the women’s singles.

The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games kicked off in Japan on Friday, July 23. The Games are scheduled to take place from 23 July to 8 August 2021 after being postponed last year due to the pandemic. This is the first time that the Olympic Games have been postponed and rescheduled, rather than cancelled.
