Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov commented on the US agreements with the Taliban and expressed regret that they could not be implemented, speaking at a press conference with his Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio, in Rome on Friday.

“We were ready to support the agreements made between the US and the Taliban. Unfortunately, it was not possible to implement them, and not only because of the Taliban’s position,” Lavrov said.

“Our Western colleagues always want to join efforts and look for collaborative answers. But still, as I was asked a few days ago, there is still a lesson to be learned after Iraq, after Libya and now after Afghanistan. Attempts to impose someone else’s system of values are very explosive. I hope that, after the third time, it will be possible to fix this conclusion in the minds of politicians who are considering further actions in foreign spaces,” he added.

Luigi Di Maio noted that coordination of the countries involved in the conflict and dialogue with Russia is essential in resolving the crisis situation in Afghanistan.

“Naturally, we are confident that Moscow, in this context, is the most important player to handle this crisis situation. Only actions that are global and mutually shared can be effective against the new authorities in Kabul,” the diplomat stated.
