Scuffles erupted after dozens of demonstrators demanding the release of Georges Abdallah confronted the French Ambassador Anne Grillo, during a visit to Sidon on Monday.

Security officers pushed back protesters who held signs and chanted as Grillo entered a theatre building for a meeting with political and community figures.

Lebanese man George Abdallah has been imprisoned in France for 38 years, and despite the expiry of his sentence, and his obtaining a conditional release ruling in 1999, the French judicial authorities refuse to release him.

The French authorities arrested George in 1984, then sentenced him to life in 1987 on charges of complicity in “terrorist” acts and participating in the assassination of an Israeli and an American diplomat.

SOT, Activist (Arabic): “We have come to condemn the visit of the French ambassador to the city of Sidon, as the French ambassador is not welcome on the land of the heroic South Gate and the capital of the resistance. Her country has detained in its prisons our revolutionary hero, George Ibrahim Abdullah, for 38 years”.
