Libya: Locals share reactions as Parliament assigns Fathi Bashagha to head government

Libyans expressed different reactions on Friday after the Parliament assigned the former Minister of Interior, Fathi Bashagha, as the new prime minister to succeed Abdel Hamid Dabaiba, who had previously rejected “any unilateral decision by the parliament.”

The deputies voted unanimously to grant confidence to Fathi Bashagha as prime minister, and voted in favor of the constitutional amendment with 126 votes out of 147 deputies who attended the session, according to reports.

“The Libyan streets were shocked by the news of the postponement of the elections. We do not know the reason for the delay. Some say that there is force majeure. We want to know what force majeure prevented the will of the people and frustrated us,” said one resident.

Another resident added, “Bashagha is a leader, and he fulfilled his duties to the fullest in the Ministry of Interior and deserved to be praised. At the same time, Mr Dabaiba delivered many projects in a short time period that no prime minister had presented before, especially on the part of the marriage support agency, and he is most worthy of the government’s leadership now.”

The Parliament voted on Thursday to amend the constitutional declaration, which provides for the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly for the drafting of the constitution, elected in 2014.

The amendment allows forming a new committee from the Parliament, the State Council and experts to consider the draft constitution and its amendments and submit it to a vote and referendum.

In its session last Monday, the parliament approved a roadmap bill extending the parliament’s work for an additional 16 months.
