LIVE: Germany elects new Federal President, Steinmeier is running for a second term

Ruptly is live from Berlin on Saturday, February 13, as the new Federal President is being elected in the Bundestag by the Federal Convention - members of the Bundestag and members elected by the parliaments of the States (Länder).

Declared candidates in these elections are President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier (SPD), who is constitutionally eligible for reelection, independent candidate nominated by The Left, Gerhard Trabert, and CDU parliamentarian Max Otte, nominated by AfD.

Earlier this year, Germany’s centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) said it was suspending Otte after the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) said it would nominate Otte to become the country’s next president.
