Ruptly is live from Tunis on Friday, December 17, as demonstrators rally against Tunisian President Kais Saied and his ongoing decision to freeze parliament until the new elections in December 2022.
Said decided also that Tunisia will hold a referendum in July 2022 on a new constitution. The North African president is a sharp critic of the existing constitution.
In mid-July, amid a series of protests over the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, President Saied dismissed Prime Minister Hisham Al-Mashishi and dissolved parliament, sparking protests as well as celebrations in the Tunisian capital and throughout the country.

The demonstration comes on the 11th anniversary of the self-immolation of street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi, which sparked a series of protests that led to the ousting of president Ben Ali and inspired the Arab Spring movement.
