The European Parliament is set to hold the award ceremony of the 2021 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, in Strasbourg on Wednesday, December 15.
During the ceremony Leonid Volkov, chief of staff for Alexei Navalny’s campaign for the 2018 Russian presidential election, is expected to give a statement. Navalny’s daughter Daria Navalnaya is also expected to participate in the event.

Founded in 1988, the Sakharov Prize is awarded each year to those fighting for human rights-related causes. The previous year saw the €50,000 ($59,000) prize awarded to the movement opposing Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko’s election victory in 2020.
