President of Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador held his daily press conference on Thursday in Mexico City, referencing the previous day’s comments about taking a “pause” in relations between Spain and Mexico.

The President stated that they are “respectful of Spain” but denounced that “Spanish companies supported by political power, both in Spain and Mexico, abused our country and our people.”

Lopez Obrador added that he did not speak of a “rupture” but of “calming the relationship” between the two countries and that “the looting of Mexico with impunity is over.”

He also stressed that Spain “should even offer apologies” for the damage done to the country by Spanish companies.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, President of Mexico (Spanish): “Like the comments I made yesterday about the relationship with Spain. I’ll take this opportunity to clarify it. We are very respectful of the Spanish people. We have deep relations with the people of Spain, but in recent times, during the neoliberal period, Spanish companies supported by political power, both in Spain and Mexico, abused our country and our people. They saw us as a land of conquest. That’s what I said yesterday.”

SOT, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, President of Mexico (Spanish): “So, they have offended us Mexicans, because, it is not only the fact that high-ranking officials work with these companies but also what this type of relationship costs us. We are talking about subsidies, money from the budget that belongs to all Mexicans, which instead of being used to lift the people out of poverty, was used to favour these companies.”

SOT, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, President of Mexico (Spanish): “What I said yesterday is ‘let’s have a pause, for the good of our peoples’. I didn’t talk about breaking up. No, we’re going to calm down the relationship so that people no longer think that Mexico will be looted with impunity. That has already happened. It’s disrespectful, and they should even apologise. They haven’t done it, it doesn’t matter, but we are going to enter into a new stage, slowly.”
