‘Myanmar Coup Leader Speaks at National Army Day Military Parade in Naypyidaw’

The leader of Myanmar’s military coup Min Aung Hlaing has addressed supporters in Naypyidaw, vowing to “safeguard democracy” and repeating claims of “electoral fraud” that led to the junta.

Promising to hold fresh elections, the general did not specify a date when a new vote could be held and made only an oblique reference to the violence plaguing Myanmar as anti-coup protests rage on.

The military has sought to portray demonstrators as the perpetrators of much of the violence, despite a security forces’ use of live rounds in a brutal crackdown on protests.

State TV warned in a separate broadcast on Friday that people “should learn from the tragedy of earlier ugly deaths that you can be in danger of getting shot to the head and back”.
