‘Myanmar Military Coup: Stabbings in Yangon as Anti-Coup Protesters Clash With Pro-Military Mobs’

Supporters of Myanmar’s military junta have taken to the streets in Yangon to voice their support for the coup d’état that toppled the elected government of Aung Sang Suu Syi.

There were multiple reports of violence in the city as marchers clashed around the central railway stations. Social media footage appears to show knife-wielding supporters of the military carrying out attacks in the city.

Despite having their way blocked by mobs of military supporters and members of the police, thousands of anti-coup demonstrators reclaimed the city centre, calling for the restoration of democracy and an end to the junta.

Facebook and Instagram have banned pages affiliated with the military government for “exceptionally severe human rights abuses and the clear risk of future military-initiated violence in Myanmar”.
