Thousands of residents watched the North Korean flag being raised for the festivities, before fireworks rang in the new year.
The event took place in Kim Il-sung Square and was attended by a crowd of several thousand revellers.
According to local news, people were banned from leaving and entering Pyongyang between December 25 and January 2. The shutting off of the capital for holidays is a regular occurrence, with controls being even tighter since the start of the pandemic.
