One of a few remaining original signed documents of the 13th Amendment was on display ahead of its auction, in Chicago on Thursday.

The 13th Amendment was a key piece of legislation leading to the abolition of slavery. It was signed by Abraham Lincoln and 107 members of congress over 157 years ago.

The Amendment is on display with a number of other historical artefacts to commemorate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday on 12th February and also in honour of Black History Month.

Caitlin Coates, who worked in historical operations at Heritage Auctions discussed the document.

“We are extremely lucky enough to present for public auction, it is maybe only one of a handful less than 14 of the original signed documents from that day in congress to come up for auction in the last 50 years. Most are already owned by institutions,” she explained

Bids will start at $200,000 dollars (€175,000) but the auction house are expecting final bids to reach potentially three or four times that in the auction.
