Pakistan: German FM Maas and counterpart Qureshi call for dialogue with the Taliban

Pakistani Foreign Minister Mehmood Qureshi and his German counterpart Heiko Maas argued that the international community must continue to engage with Afghanistan following the Taliban’s seizure of power, during a press conference in Islamabad on Tuesday.

“The international community must remain engaged, humanitarian assistance must flow, do not let the economic collapse in Afghanistan take place,” said Qureshi.

“Instability is in nobody’s interest,” he added.

Maas said the German government have already provided more than €100 million in humanitarian aid, and the federal government already pledged €500 million for projects and measures in countries neighbouring Afghanistan.

“Beyond that we are promoting tangible concrete projects such as border management and projects to prevent extremism,” he added.

Both diplomats said that if the soon to be Taliban government respects its commitments and forms an inclusive state, the support from both parties will continue.

SOT, Heiko Maas, German Federal Foreign Minister (German): “Whether we can rely on the Taliban promises or not, is something we will only see in the coming days or weeks, that a new government will be introduced by the Taliban. This government should be inclusive. We think it is important to represent all the Afghan people, even those who don’t support the Taliban. It remains to be seen if the Taliban will take this into account when presenting their new government.”

Military interventions are not suitable in the long term to export a form of government.”
