A number of animals rescued from the region that was affected by the oil spill caused by the Tonga volcano eruption have been receiving care at the Park of Legends zoo, as seen on Friday in Lima.
They were all suffering from exposure to oil and were seen receiving medication and being cleaned by zoo workers.

On Thursday, Peruvian President Pedro Castillo announced an environmental emergency following the oil spill that has already affected 21 beaches on the Pacific coast.

Castillo made the statements during his visit to Cavero beach, one of the most affected areas in Ventanilla, where he said he expected the Repsol-run refinery to assume responsibility in the ecological disaster.

Strong waves caused by the eruption of the Tonga volcano last week caused an oil spill off the Peruvian coast during the unloading process of a crude oil tank at a refinery run by Repsol. According to the Andean country’s environment minister, at least 6,000 barrels of crude oil spilled on the Peruvian coast.​
