Animals from the region that has been affected by the oil spill caused by the Tonga volcano eruption are being housed in the Park of Legends zoo in Lima, a zoo official told reporters on Friday.

“The rehabilitation process is quite slow. We have called on other experts, apart from the team that we also have some volunteers who are collaborating with us,” operations manager ​​Lizeth Bermudez explained at a press event from the zoo.

On Thursday, Pervian President Pedro Castillo, announced an environmental emergency following the oil spill that has already affected 21 beaches on the Pacific coast.

Castillo made the statements during his visit to Cavero beach, one of the most affected areas in Ventanilla, where he said he expected the Repsol-run refinery to assume responsibility in the ecological disaster.

Strong waves caused by the eruption of the Tonga volcano last week caused an oil spill off the Peruvian coast during the unloading process of a crude oil tank at a refinery run by Repsol. According to the Andean country’s environment minister, at least 6,000 barrels of crude oil spilled on the Peruvian coast.​
