Supporters of Peruvian President Pedro Castillo took to the streets of Lima demanding the establishment of a constituent assembly on Thursday after opposition lawmakers presented an official motion in Congress requesting a vacancy motion of the left-wing president.
Hundreds of supporters marched with Peruvian and Wiphala (indigenous people’s) flags while chanting, ‘Urgent, urgent, close the Congress.’
Castillo, who has been in the government just over 100 days, is facing a request for a presidential vacancy due to ‘moral incapacity.’ A presidential impeachment would need at least 52 votes from the 130 legislators in Congress.
According to local media, the requested impeachment by Peruvian right-wing parties states that Castillo seeks personal benefit from his position in power and is a ‘dangerous’ person for democracy.

SOUNDBITES

SOT, Protester (Spanish): “And we have to defend with soul, heart and life the government of the people, because Pedro Castillo Terrones represents each one of us the Peruvians and we demand that he close the Congress.”

SOT, Protester (Spanish): “Enough of the obstructionism of this fascist Congress. The self-convened peoples come to defend dignity, and dignity is priceless, the dignity of the women of the Peruvian Andes.”
