Peru: Protesters denounce Pres Castillo's new govt in Lima

Hundreds of Peruvians took to the streets of Lima on Sunday to protest the appointment of members of the cabinet of ministers of newly elected President Pedro Castillo.

Protesters especially voiced their disapproval of Guido Bellido, the new president of the Council of Ministers, who has been investigated on charges of terrorism apology following an online interview in which Bellido was allegedly favourable of the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso), a Peruvian revolutionary communist party and guerrilla group.

“We are here in defence of democracy, we cannot and must not allow Peru to become a colony of Venezuela, Cuba or communist China. This is a fight against terrorism and the whole world must align with us,” protester Abel Diaz explained.

During the gathering, the protesters stood in front of the headquarters of the Peruvian Joint Command of the Armed Forces waving Peruvian flags and holding signs denouncing the newly elected administration.

SOT, Abel Diaz, Protester (Spanish): “It is a fusible bill (replacement), a fusible cabinet, they have put it for the government to burn its shoot bullet in the cabinet vacancy. What they want is to shoot the two bullets to be able to close the congress and seize power. When in a legislative period of five years the congress claims no confidence in the cabinet of ministers two times, the president has the power, according to the constitution, to shut down the congress again and re-call congressional elections, as Vizcarra did in 2019.”

SOT, Maribel Herrrera, Protester (Spanish): “Here we have always defended democracy, to eat a decent bread that we got with the sweat of our brow, not from garbage like Venezuela, like Cuba, who have allied with them, not us. Death first before falling for these terrorists and communists.”
