The President of Peru, Pedro Castillo Terrones, arrived in Quinua, Ayacucho, on Thursday, to take part in a symbolic swearing-in ceremony after assuming the presidency of the Republic the day before.
“I, Jose Pedro Castillo Terrones, swear by God and by the homeland to faithfully carry out the office of constitutional president of the Republic of Peru by order of the Peruvian people, for a country without corruption, for all the peoples of Peru, and a new constitution,” said the new president of Peru solemnly.
During the ceremony, Castillo was accompanied by Peruvian and foreign authorities. The Peruvian president animatedly danced along with folkloric performances.
During a speech, Castillo called on “all the men and women of the country to be vigilant, and to see that the mayors, governors, ministers and congressmen get to work for Peru,” and added, “We are vigilant, and I will be the first to punish the authority that steals a penny from the Peruvian people.”
The new president will govern from 2021 to 2026 with an electoral programme that includes a bill to reform the constitution, a new social protection system, and a special emphasis on the fight against corruption.
Castillo won the 6 June run-off election against Keiko Fujimori, who finally acknowledged the result after delaying the official announcement with accusations of fraud on several ballots.
