Clashes broke out as hundreds of opposition supporters took to the streets of Lima on Saturday in a march to demand the impeachment of President Jose Pedro Castillo.
Demonstrators clashed with police officers, who blocked the marauding crowd from one side of the road to the other to prevent the march from passing.
Several attendees chanted slogans calling for ‘freedom’ while holding Peruvian flags.
“They have not let them review the votes, there have not been votes by the endorsement of the OAS (Organization of American States). This man has come to power in a fraudulent manner and we have come to complain. We thought we would give him a chance, and yet he has already been leading us to the abyss for 120 days,” a protester said.
Castillo, who has been in government for just over 100 days, is facing a presidential vacancy motion for “moral incapacity.” A presidential impeachment would require at least 52 votes from the 130 legislators in Congress.
According to local media, the motion filed by Peruvian right-wing parties alleges Castillo seeks personal gain through his position in power and is a ‘dangerous’ person for democracy.
