Peru: Clashes break out at protest against energy giant Repsol following oil spill

Hundreds of demonstrators held a protest at Plaza San Martin in Lima against energy giant Repsol on Friday. The move came in the wake of an oil spill, which has caused an environmental disaster.
A group of protesters clashed with police blocking their path, as seen in the footage.
“What Repsol has done is a crime and an outrage in which it has polluted and has not had the rescue reserve. Because each company has to reserve in order to protect,” said President of the National Federation of Rural Women Lourdes Huanca.
Approximately 12,000 barrels of oil spilled into the sea from a tanker at the La Pampilla refinery after the vessel was hit by waves in mid-January. The waves were caused by the Tonga eruption. An investigation into the incident by the authorities is ongoing.
