Cleanup teams were seen attempting to clear the sea and sand of oil at Ventanilla’s Cavero beach, north of Lima, on Wednesday, following a devastating oil spill off the Peruvian coast, the second in under two weeks.

Teams of helpers dressed in white suits were seen sludging through oil slick by the shore, with large vehicles being used to remove oil from the water.

Peru’s environmental agency OEFA has said that about 1.7 million square metres of land and 1.2 million square metres of ocean have been affected by the spill.

Many have accused Spanish oil company Repsol of the disaster, demanding that the firm take responsibility.

Repsol has stated that efforts to clean up the spill will take place until the end of February.

Volunteers were already cleaning the impact of a first spill in Ventanilla, after the oil tanker Mare Doricum spilled 6,000 barrels on January 15.
