Peru: Long queues outside Lima vaccination centre as first omicron cases detected

Several lines of vehicles stretched along the car park and around Lima’s Villa Deportiva Nacional on Tuesday, during the coronavirus booster vaccination campaign following the detection of the first cases of the omicron variant in the country.

Drone footage showed long lines of vehicles around the complex as people waited to receive their booster dose.

“I think it’s a good move by the government [to apply the third dose],” one attendee said from inside his vehicle, before receiving his third dose.

“The recommendation comes from the state and from many entities that try to protect the population, but it’s up to each person to obey and take care of themselves, and to take care of their environment, their loved ones,” he added.

Peruvian Health Minister Hernando Cevallos confirmed this week the detection of 12 cases of the omicron strain in the Peruvian capital, announcing the advance of the third booster dose starting at three months throughout the country.

SOT, Lino Reyes, Attendee (Spanish): “I think it’s a good thing that the government has done [to apply the third dose] because they are trying to protect as much of the population as possible with this third dose because of this increase in infections with this new strain, and I agree. Hopefully, a lot of people will do it [boost their vaccine].”
