Under the “Mothers at the Border” initiative, protesters gathered in the Polish town of Michalowo close to the Belarusian border on Saturday demanding humanitarian assistance for refugees.
Two former First Ladies gave speeches at the event calling for Poland to offer aid to migrant children stranded at the border.
“We especially do not agree with the inhumane treatment of children. We do not agree with them using us, Polish women and mothers, as observers of the drama unfolding before our eyes,” said Former First Lady of Poland Anna Komorowska.
One protester said, “Poland is not just, a heartless PiS (Law and Justice Party) government. We know that what is happening is cruel, and in fact, this is where we will discuss what to do next, because I do not believe that, with this government in power, they will be able to stop dog-baiting children.”
On September 2, a state of emergency was declared along the country’s border with Belarus, amid a surge in migrant crossings. The state of emergency was further extended into the month of November on September 30, drawing criticism from human rights campaigners.

SOT, Jolanda Kwasniewska, Wife of former president Aleksander Kawsniewski (Polish): “The child’s place is in a warm home, in the mother’s arms. We sit in our warm houses, watch the news and say: it’s too bad that so much evil is happening. Each of us has a real opportunity to help in this matter.”

SOT, Anna Komorowska, Wife of former president Bronislaw Komorowski (Polish): “We especially do not agree with the inhumane treatment of children. We do not agree to putting us, Polish women and mothers, as observers of the drama unfolding before our eyes.”
