People lined up outside a fireworks shop in the Polish border town of Slubice on Wednesday, as they tried to bypass Germany’s ban on fireworks for New Year’s Eve.

Staff at the Funke store could be seen allowing a few customers at a time to avoid the crowds inside. The store witnessed dozens of Germans arriving for the second year in a row, due to the same ban.

The German government issued the ban for the second year in a row in an attempt to stop COVID-19 from spreading during the festive celebrations as the country battles a wave of Omicron infections.
