People queued for as long as two hours to get a free COVID-19 test in Lisbon on Friday, as Portugal surpassed 30,000 daily cases for the first time since the pandemic began.

Long queues were expected ahead of New Year’s due to the current requirement to present a test in order to enter hotels and restaurants and the caution people are taking before meeting friends and family.

“I’m queuing up for a corona test because I think it will be necessary to get access to restaurants and events tonight, it’s the 31st. I have been queuing up for two hours, I think it’s a bit too long. I appreciate that the government and the municipality have many venues where you can get a corona test, but I think they should have more staff,” a tourist said.

“I’m also going to a hotel to spend New Year’s Eve and I have to take the test. And I think it’s great that we have to take the test now at this time because it’s critical for us all to be safe with each other,” a local added.
