Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei condemned the West for blaming Minsk for orchestrating the flow of migrants to the Poland-Belarus border, speaking in Moscow on Thursday.
“This sort of allegation that Belarus is organising the transportation of migrants to the border or bringing them into the country on purpose is an absolute lie and an insinuation,” the minister said, adding that Minsk had not received any evidence proving it.
Makei stated that Belarus couldn’t stop the foreigners from entering the country if they had the necessary documents to do so.
He said the migrants came from “countries whose leadership has unfortunately been overthrown by the efforts of Europe itself and the Americans.”
“Therefore, in my opinion, the fact that now there is an influx of illegal migrants to Belarus, seeking to get further to the countries of the European Union, is the result of the objective reality that has developed in this geopolitical context,” he stated.
The Belarusian diplomat went on to deny Moscow’s involvement in the migration crisis and called such statements “the result of the actions of the European Union itself” and “attempts to justify their, let us say, destructive, confrontational policy towards Russia.”
He also said calls to deploy NATO troops to the Belarus-Poland border and the likely follow-up would warrant an “adequate” response from the Union State.

SOT, Vladimir Makei, Belarus Foreign Minister (Russian): “You know, this sort of allegation that Belarus is organising the transportation of migrants to the border or bringing them into the country on purpose is an absolute lie and an insinuation. Not a single piece of material evidence has been presented to the Belarusian side. There are only some informational statements. We cannot prohibit foreign nationals from coming to Belarus if they have permits. When granting visas, they demonstrate the relevant necessary documents, drawn up in the prescribed manner. For what purposes they come to Belarus - we cannot look into everyone’s soul and find out. What has happened is that at some point information about certain tensions between Belarus and the European Union came to light. Moreover, after the well-known events related to the presidential elections in the republic last year, a number of European countries invited the so-called ‘refugees’ from Belarus, provided them with maximum favourable conditions and benefits. It wasn’t just on TV in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and other countries. It was heard all over the world on the Internet. I do not rule out that residents of the so-called migration-disadvantaged countries also heard this information. Countries whose leadership has unfortunately been overthrown by the efforts of Europe itself and the Americans. Therefore, in my opinion, the fact that now there is an influx of illegal migrants to Belarus, seeking to get further to the countries of the European Union, is the result of the objective reality that has developed in this geopolitical context.”
SOT, Vladimir Makei, Belarus Foreign Minister (Russian): “Calls to deploy NATO troops and possible follow-up actions in this regard would entail adequate responses from the Union State, as stipulated in our military doctrine recently approved by the presidents of Belarus and Russia. Of course, the reaction will be appropriate. But we have to understand that this will lead to another round of tension, an unwanted round of tension, which is not in our interests. This is why we see such appeals as absolutely irresponsible, coming from absolutely irresponsible politicians.”
SOT, Vladimir Makei, Belarus Foreign Minister (Russian): “I am absolutely certain that no one has ever received any instructions from Moscow, there can be no such thing. What is happening, I repeat, is the result of the actions of the European Union itself, and looking for a black cat in a black room here is an absolutely futile exercise. These are only attempts to justify their, let us say, destructive, confrontational policy towards Russia because if we look at the big picture, in a geopolitical context, all the actions that the so-called collective West is now taking towards Belarus are aimed precisely at Russia, because Russia poses, as they believe, a threat to the collective West. This is why everything that is being done now in relation to Belarus is done in order to punish Russia as well, in some way. This is my own opinion, and I think it has quite good reasons for that.”
